Cyber investigations are becoming a critical frontline tool in the fight against human trafficking, as criminals increasingly use digital platforms to recruit and exploit victims across regions, including parts of Africa.

From deceptive job offers to social media grooming, traffickers leverage anonymity and publicly available data to target vulnerable individuals, particularly young people seeking connection online.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is supporting law enforcement to counter these threats through advanced digital investigation techniques. In North Macedonia, a UNODC-trained officer used data extracted from a suspect’s phone to uncover video evidence of child trafficking, enabling authorities to locate the victim and arrest 12 accomplices within days. The case highlights how digital evidence, including messages, metadata and IP addresses, can reveal recruitment methods, link suspects to crimes and strengthen prosecutions.

Investigators now combine digital forensics, financial tracking and online surveillance to map criminal networks, trace illicit payments and shut down trafficking operations. Through training, international cooperation, and the use of open-source intelligence, UNODC is helping build law enforcement capacity to respond to increasingly sophisticated, technology-driven crimes, turning the same digital tools traffickers use into powerful instruments for justice.
